Environment Placement

I added a simple environment for the doe. Since the real doe is a stuffed animal, I wanted to create an artsy product. Sort of like a stuffed animal one would buy off of Etsy. In fact, that is where my reference comes from!

Next Step

For right now, I have a still image. I want to add a small camera move and maybe add another object in the scene (Meaning doing more Photogrammetry!) I might also make small breakdown video of the lighting and textures.

Doe Test with PhotoScan

Thoughts

I am extremely pleased with the out come of this mesh! I was so excited that I showed some of my friends and they thought I was done! Now, that could be because of the texture detail looks like I am done. I used the same exactly set of pictures that I used with ReCap, but I had an additional 11 images. This was the outcome. This mesh looks fixable, and, because I am very new to zBrush, this "shouldn't" be too difficult to smooth. My problem areas might be where the front arms meet the back legs. That part of the mesh is fuse together. But that is much better than having polys that are stretched outward or inward from the main mesh.

PhotoScan Review

I am in love with using PhotoScan! Now, of course, I don't know to many Photogremmtry software, but I have a lot of control before making a mesh. The algorithm in software also seems to give lot cleaner data.

Likes

  • Seeing and being able to edit the point cloud and dense cloud
  • Control over ever step in the mesh creation
  • Seeing exact wait times next to seeing the approximate time left.

Not so Like

  • Easy to over analyze images and making mesh if the settings are pushed to high
  • The interface looks data with tan boarders
  • lack of shortcut to switch between tools

Thoughts

This mesh looks pretty good at a distance, but there are several parts where the geometry is very distorted. The next step after this is to use zBrush to clean the mesh, but I am still very new with zBrush and worry about fixing the mesh.
I do have plans to retry creating the mesh using Photoscan and comparing the two outcomes. More on that soon. Overall, the outcome has me very excited.

Autodesk ReCap Review

Every software has its perks and flaws. It's good to know my thoughts on the software because it can speed up workflow for future projects. This is my first time using ReCap and my only other photogrammetry software experience is from PhotoScan.

The Likes

  • Free with student account
  • I can create meshes from home
  • Ability to reorientate mesh
  • Clean design interface
  • UVs created are not that terrible
  • Able to export .obj and .fbx (and more)

The Dislikes

  • Limited to only uploading 100 images
  • Time for images to upload, plus the time for the mesh to be created and downloaded from Autodesk servers.
  • Unable to edit to see a preview pointcloud before mesh is created

The Begins...

I've been interested in doing photogrammetry for almost a year. I was orginally going to try back then, but I was unable to download a working copy of photogrammetry software on my computer. Recently, I got a crash course on the photogrammetry software, PhotoScan, in one of my classes and that was the spark. Unfournetly, my course ended with how to export out of PhotoScan. The rest of the cleaning is up to me, or ask for help later on.
The major perk of learning photogrammetry is that I have an exciting reason to learn several new software. I can't wait to get started so lets jump into my pipeline concept.

Pipeline & Plans

  1. Take 360 photographs of desired objects
  2. Bring images into a Lightroom/Photoshop/Bridge and adjust exposure and white balance
  3. Bring images into photogrammetry software (Photoscan & ReCap)
  4. Bring Mesh into zBrush to clean to model
  5. Adjust UVs (Headus or other)
  6. Re-texture model in Substance Painter
  7. Light and Render in Maya or Houdini

Ideas to Gram-e-fy

  • Stuffed animals with short fur
  • Shoe
  • Video Controller
  • Matte bottles/containers
  • Food
  • Room

I am documenting my journey toward creating photoreal renders! One step toward that is using photogrammetry to create the most photoreal models. This is a mostly self-thought journey with experimentation with several new software. I am happily expecting bumps along the way.
