Assignment


1. It is suggested you use sin, cos, noise, abs, rand and if functions somewhere in the work.
2. The motion should be based on a mechanical object that displays cyclical motion. However it must
involve motion beyond just simple rotation.
3. The result must be 10 seconds minimum.
4. The environments must represent and present the animated object well and all objects should be
shaded and lit to a high aesthetic quality.
5. All aspects are to be completed in Houdini.

I built this referencing a guide from a Lego Sisyphus Sculpture.

For the most part everything was built to the same was as in the guide. I did change a few thing in placement and switch out a conveyor built with a gear.

Dot Product

Dot products are used to find the point of constraint between 2 points.
So, example, we know where point A and point C are in space and also have a motion on one or both points, but we do not know where point B is in space. We use the length of A-B and B-C to calculate the constraint using the Pythagorean theorem.

Problems


I had a render issues. In scene view, my scene would render for a few seconds and finish with a pixelated image or not render at all. When rendering using the command line in linux, I got an error 139. Eventually, it was narrowed down to certain branches in my network (rendered in green).

The problem was the geometry had holes. For some reason it was only affecting the pieces rendered in green.

How I think this happened is because I normal model in Wireframe Ghost mode. Looking back at how the geometry looks in this mode compared to flat shaded mode, I can see I miss the bad geometry.
